Ethiopia Launches Smart Health Pilot with RadiSen’s AI Technology at Yekatit 12 Hospital

News

In a major step toward digital health transformation, the Addis Ababa City Administration the Ethiopian Government has launched a Proof of Concept (PoC) project in partnership with RadiSen. The initiative brings AI-powered diagnostic capabilities to the public healthcare system—starting at Yekatit 12 Hospital, one of the city’s largest hospitals.

The PoC, launched on June 5, 2025, is part of Addis Ababa’s broader Smart City Strategy, particularly the “Smart Living” pillar focused on enhancing healthcare delivery using advanced technology. The project is a collaboration between the city’s Innovation & Technology Development Bureau, Health Bureau, and RadiSen, and aims to improve early diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB), pneumonia, and other lung abnormalities using artificial intelligence.

This technology enhances radiologists’ diagnostic capacity and helps deliver timely, high-quality care to our patients, said a city official during the launch ceremony, which was covered by Addis Media Network.

What’s Being Piloted?

  • RadiSen’s AXIR-CX AI model, which can detect TB, pneumonia, and other lung conditions from digital chest X-rays in real time.
  • A smart portable digital X-ray system (smart pdx) donated by RadiSen and installed at Yekatit 12 Hospital.
  • A connected teleradiology platform to remotely interpret and manage X-ray diagnostics across facilities.

Impact Goals

  • Reduce diagnostic turnaround time
  • Improve TB detection accuracy in resource-limited settings
  • Support clinicians in high-volume hospitals
  • Lay the groundwork for national-scale AI deployment in healthcare

What’s Next?

The PoC includes a joint project team tasked with collecting anonymized patient datasets, evaluating AI performance, and preparing a roadmap for scaling the solution across the city and Ethiopia. The successful launch and operation of this AI-powered X-ray system is expected to catalyze future collaborative AI projects in breast cancer detection, pediatric pneumonia, and other critical health areas.
